An Egyptian court has sentenced a top Islamic leader to one year in prison on charges of insulting judges. The Cairo Criminal Court has sentenced Hazem Salah Abu-Ismail over comments about his trial. On Monday, Abu-Ismail told judges that the court was void and that Egypt's judiciary was not a real judiciary in the first place. Abu-Ismail was a top ally of ousted president Mohamed Morsi. He was also a presidential hopeful in 2012. The military-stalled government stepped up the crackdown against Morsi's supporters after it brought him down in July last year. Many of his allies and supporters have been arrested on various charges.
Egypt is continuing with its crackdown on anti-government protesters. An Egyptian court hands lengthy jail terms to a group of protesters while another court acquits six policemen involved in deadly violence. The court in Cairo handed two-year jail terms to 31 protesters on charges of invading Cairo's iconic Liberation Square last month. Another court in Alexandria acquitted five policemen and the former head of security in Alexandria. They were on trial for involvement in the killing of revolutionary protesters back in 20-11. Meanwhile, the trial of Egypt's ousted President, Mohamed Morsi and tens of Muslim Brotherhood members on charges of orchestrating jail escapes has been adjourned to February 24. On Saturday an Egyptian court sought the death penalty for three journalists and three others charged with endangering national security by leaking state secrets and documents to Qatar. After the sentence has been referred to the top religious authority, the Grand Mufti, for a non-binding opinion, the final ruling is expected on June 18. The verdict against former president Mohamed Mursi was postponed to the same day. Mursi is charged in the same case. The sentence is the latest since a crackdown on the Muslim Brotherhood after an army takeover stripped Mursi of power in 2013. http://feeds.reuters.com/~r/reuters/topNews/~3/hTmjwctGurA/us-egypt-court-idUSKCN0XY0A9 http://www.wochit.com This video was produced by YT Wochit News using http://wochit.com

Last week, 17 al-Azhar University students were sentenced to jail terms on similar charges. Ever since, it has sentenced a large number of Brotherhood's members and government opponents to prison terms.
A Cairo court has thrown out a suit filed by a Muslim Brotherhood lawyer demanding that popular Egyptian satirist Bassem Youssef's TV show be banned for insulting the president and Islam. The suit claimed Youssef's programme "corrupted morals" and violated "religious principles." Unbowed , Youssef was back on air over the weekend lampooning the Egyptian president. In recent months, Islamists have filed several cases against journalists and TV show hosts accusing them of inciting violence or insulting Morsi, who took office in July as Egypt's first elected Islamist president. Travel video about destination Cairo in Egypt. Cairo is a world metropolis and tantamount to being an open-air museum. The Nile divides it in two and the centre of the city contains modern shops and office buildings in close proximity to medieval churches and ancient mosques. The Khan el-Khalili bazaar is like something from a bygone age and where the Orient combines with the Middle Ages, 'A Thousand And One Nights' amid Islamic Cairo. Goods inspired by pharaohs Tutankhamen and Nefertiti are in constant demand and it's where haggling is the norm. The bazaar is a colorful place with smoking hookahs, exotic carpets and musical instruments as well as a huge array of herbs and spices. Abu Serga is the city's oldest church and dates back to Fatima times. It was built on the ruins of an even o...
Travel video about destination Cairo in Egypt. Cairo is a cultural melting pot and with a population of sixteen million it is the largest metropolis on the African continent. The Egyptian people refer to their capital city as Um Al Dunya, ‘Mother of the World’. The history of the Sankt Sergius Church dates back to Abu Serga in the 5th century A.D. Legend has it that it was built on the site where the Holy Family once sought refuge. Thus, the richly decorated church is a popular Christian place of pilgrimage and is situated in Fustat in the middle of Koptic, the oldest district in Cairo. The spacious Mamelucks Necropolis is unique within the Islamic world. Here, instead of conventional graves, entire houses were built for the dead. Within the necropolis the mosques and mausoleums of the Mam...

In Kafka's novel, the story begins: "Someone must have been telling lies about Josef K., because he had done nothing wrong, but one day he was arrested." This week, a trial took place that had something of the Kafka-esque. In a 20-month-long ordeal, and after months of extended pre-trial imprisonment, repeated postponements, charges that lack convincing evidence and hearings fraught with complexity - three Al Jazeera journalists were sentenced to three years in prison by a Cairo court. Evidence including footage of a trotting horse from Sky News Arabia; holiday snaps; a pop music video, and like the fictive account of Josef K - a bank employee, who is unexpectedly arrested one morning for an unspecified crime, the story of the 'Al Jazeera 3' makes for uncomfortable reading. One journal...
