In Egypt, the trial of journalists from Al Jazeera resumed on Wednesday. They are accused of supporting the outlawed Muslim Brotherhood. Prosecutors claim the journalists broadcast false reports to help a terrorist organization. But the case has raised questions about the Egyptian government's tolerance of dissent. Another key development out of Egypt is the final part of court proceedings against former President Hosni Mubarak. The trial is due to begin on Thursday. CCTV's Adel EL Mahrouky joins us live now from Cairo for more on that.
An Egyptian court has handed death sentences to Muslim Brotherhood leader Mohamed Badie and 13 other top members of the group. They were among those charged in connection with violent clashes in the canal city of Suez in August 20-13. The clashes were triggered by security forces' deadly attacks on the camps of the supporters of ousted president Mohamed Morsi in Cairo. Badie had been handed down two death sentences that were later overturned on appeal. Also on Monday, 46 brotherhood members were sentenced to two to five years behind bars in the Delta governorate of Kafr el-Sheikh. They had been arrested during protests marking the fourth anniversary of the revolution in January. The Egyptian government has been cracking down harshly on any opposition since Morsi was ousted two years ago. ...
A criminal court in Cairo announced on Saturday that it was postponing its final verdict in the espionage trial of former Egyptian President Mohamed Morsi to May 7. Morsi has been charged with espionage along with 10 co-defendants, who are all accused of leaking classified documents to Qatari intelligence. Egyptian authorities claim that the leaked documents were intended to cause division within Egypt. "Where are the media? The men are here!" - relatives of 26 men arrested for 'debauchery' in a televised police raid on a Cairo bath house. Their chant is aimed at the Egyptian media, much of which has championed a police witch hunt against the country's gay community.
A Cairo court has delayed the hearing against top Muslim Brotherhood leaders that are accused of being linked with the killing of protesters after the leaders were unable to show up for security reasons. One of the groups top leaders, Mohammed Badie is included in the group of three officials accused of inciting violence during an anti-Brotherhood protest in Cairo on June 30. The clashes that took place outside the Muslim Brotherhood's headquarters resulted in 9 deaths and 91 injuries.
On Saturday an Egyptian court sought the death penalty for three journalists and three others charged with endangering national security by leaking state secrets and documents to Qatar. After the sentence has been referred to the top religious authority, the Grand Mufti, for a non-binding opinion, the final ruling is expected on June 18. The verdict against former president Mohamed Mursi was postponed to the same day. Mursi is charged in the same case. The sentence is the latest since a crackdown on the Muslim Brotherhood after an army takeover stripped Mursi of power in 2013. http://feeds.reuters.com/~r/reuters/topNews/~3/hTmjwctGurA/us-egypt-court-idUSKCN0XY0A9 http://www.wochit.com This video was produced by YT Wochit News using http://wochit.com

Travel video about destination Cairo in Egypt. Cairo is a world metropolis and tantamount to being an open-air museum. The Nile divides it in two and the centre of the city contains modern shops and office buildings in close proximity to medieval churches and ancient mosques. The Khan el-Khalili bazaar is like something from a bygone age and where the Orient combines with the Middle Ages, 'A Thousand And One Nights' amid Islamic Cairo. Goods inspired by pharaohs Tutankhamen and Nefertiti are in constant demand and it's where haggling is the norm. The bazaar is a colorful place with smoking hookahs, exotic carpets and musical instruments as well as a huge array of herbs and spices. Abu Serga is the city's oldest church and dates back to Fatima times. It was built on the ruins of an even o...
Travel video about destination Cairo in Egypt. Cairo is a cultural melting pot and with a population of sixteen million it is the largest metropolis on the African continent. The Egyptian people refer to their capital city as Um Al Dunya, ‘Mother of the World’. The history of the Sankt Sergius Church dates back to Abu Serga in the 5th century A.D. Legend has it that it was built on the site where the Holy Family once sought refuge. Thus, the richly decorated church is a popular Christian place of pilgrimage and is situated in Fustat in the middle of Koptic, the oldest district in Cairo. The spacious Mamelucks Necropolis is unique within the Islamic world. Here, instead of conventional graves, entire houses were built for the dead. Within the necropolis the mosques and mausoleums of the Mam...

John Jairo Velásquez Vásquez, aka ‘Popeye’, is something of a local hero to many in the Colombian city of Medellin. He’s stopped in the streets and asked for autographs and selfies. His celebrity is undiminished after spending 23 years in jail. In the heyday of the infamous Medellin drug cartel, he worked for Pablo Escobar as a hitman, and still says he enjoyed the job in which he tortured and murdered literally hundreds. Unsurprisingly, not everyone sees him as a hero. In Kafka's novel, the story begins: "Someone must have been telling lies about Josef K., because he had done nothing wrong, but one day he was arrested." This week, a trial took place that had something of the Kafka-esque. In a 20-month-long ordeal, and after months of extended pre-trial imprisonment, repeated postponements, charges that lack convincing evidence and hearings fraught with complexity - three Al Jazeera journalists were sentenced to three years in prison by a Cairo court. Evidence including footage of a trotting horse from Sky News Arabia; holiday snaps; a pop music video, and like the fictive account of Josef K - a bank employee, who is unexpectedly arrested one morning for an unspecified crime, the story of the 'Al Jazeera 3' makes for uncomfortable reading. One journal...
